What's the point?

In this day and age cell phones are everywhere, right. Almost everybody owns some sort of cellphone, which is completely insane!
In some ways these devices are pretty cool. Personally, I am able to FaceTime, Text, and Call family members or friends who might be many miles away. I can also capture so many aspects of my life and the world around me.
But what do you do when you only ever capture pictures versus collecting moments, memories, and experiences? For starters, I would suggest to put the phone down, hard I know. Besides that you just need to live and enjoy the moment while you have it.
One 4th of July, I tried to live in the moment rather than capture it.
If I am being honest, I am probably never going to re-watch that video of the smiley face fireworks, so why take it. Why do we trouble ourselves on focusing the camera just right, or getting the perfect angle? What's the point?
Each of these things floated through my mind, so in that moment I did put the phone down. I was actually able to enjoy the five minute firework experience. I also looked around at the hundreds of people who had their phones out, these people weren't able to fully enjoy the thrilling experience.
It felt like I had an outsider's look, or that I was watching them from the outside of an exhibit. Except in my case, I was in a purple camping chair surrounded by people with their bright screens, literally.

To be honest, there might have still been some useless pictures and videos that were taken on my part. However, unlike hundreds of other people, I still have storage on my phone filled with space.
In the end I was able to see others around me in a new light, and I tried to experience the world without my phone.

  1. It takes people years, even decades to realize to enjoy the world around without their cell phones. I'm glad that you were able to realize this truth.
